Southmost Section of the Texas APA
Membership
The Soutmost Section has 90 total APA members. Twenty one percent or 19 of those are also members of AICP.
Location
This section contains 19 counties including Aransas, Bee, Brooks, Cameron, Duval, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Karns, Kenedy, Kleberg, Live Oak, McMullen, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Starr, Webb, and Willacy Counties.
Meetings
The general membership meeting schedule for the rest of 1998 is as follows:
July 24, 1998 San Benito
September 18, 1998 Mission (tentative)
October 30, 1998 Harlingen
January 15, 1999 in La Feria at Noon.
General membership meetings are typically held four times a year, at a minimum, in various locations throughout the region depending on who is willing to find a venue for the meeting meal and follow-up program on issues of local or regional interest. Executive member meetings are held an additional four to six times per year to allow the officers to meet and develop work plans for specific goals to be accomplished.
Newsletter
The editor of the newsletter is the Section Secretary, Susana Huerta-Ramos. She is also the City Planner for the City of Harlingen. Any ideas for newsletter articles are always welcome (even from other chapters). A variety of authors will keep the articles interesting to more of our members. We have recently started a couple of new features. One is a feature with our Planning Commissioner members in mind, while the other is for those planners preparing for next year’s AICP Exam. Other Activities
At our June executive committee meeting, levels of service were discussed and officers marked intermediate and advanced level of service items we want to undertake. It was later noted that while we have a great start in doing some of the intermediate and advanced items, many of the basic level service needs have not been addressed very well. Therefore, we will be re-evaluating priorities of BASIC service needs at our next meeting.
